HMS

Pinafore

OSU Department of Theatre 2018

class project

H.M.S Pinafore is an operetta by Gilbert and Sullivan written in 1878. Set on Her Majesty’s ship “Pinafore”, we follow the characters wherever they go, and together with them, we live through an incredible story of love, duty, and mystery. Spiced with a hint of British humor, this incredible operetta wouldn’t leave anyone indifferent.

The design was inspired by warships from the 19th century when England was the true Monarch of the Sea. Since this operetta is a comedy, I wanted to have a serious design with a couple of elements which “don’t belong”. It’s up to an attentive audience to find those elements and have a good laugh!

As an audience, we look at the boat like we are on a boat. There is no “fourth wall”, however, the audience doesn’t have a cover of the sail, and that is the only element which supposes to indicate the difference between the house and the stage.
